GARNATXA, SYRAH, MOSCATEL, SUMOLL NEGRE + BLANC - 2019
An 8th generation Blancafort, local, Jordi took over his parents’ vines when they retired in 2000. NaIvely he thought viticulture would be something he could do on weekends and summer holidays. After a few years those weekends and summer holidays had turned into full time, so he gave up his day job and dedicated himself to winemaking. In 2008 he began experimenting making wines with no additions at all and with the help of his neighbour and guru of sorts Joan Ramon Escoda, he evolved to fully natural both in vineyard and cellar by 2012. No additions in vineyard save the occasional copper and sulphur treatment, as well as herbal teas and preparations. In cellar no additions whatsoever.
All of Jordi’s 15 hectares are situated in and around Blancafort in the Conca de Barberà region with its Mediterranean climate and nights that are always a few degrees cooler than sea level, maintaining acidity and freshness in his wines. His plots are mostly on well draining sandy calcareous soil and as a geologist Jordi can tell you the intricate details of soil structure in each and every one of his plots, as well as how the Mediterranean drives the terroirs in his wines in terms of structure and salinity. The elevation of Jordi’s plots, situated in the hills surrounding the village, start from 400m and go up to 600m above sea level and ensure that despite his wines’ ripeness they are always held together by a beautiful balance and acidity.
